A breast lift addresses sagging, uneven breasts and dropping while a breast augmentation increases breast size and restores volume to the breast. Board-certified plastic surgeon, and President of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Dr. Daniel C. Mills discusses when to consider a breast lift versus a breast augmentation.
“I start out by asking my patients if they are happy with their volume. If they are happy with their volume then there is no reason to put in an implant,” explains Dr. Mills. In such cases a breast lift alone will do. “If the problem is with volume and drooping, then an implant would be ideal because it will provide both volume and a bit of a lift.”
New techniques and materials are being developed in order to allow plastic surgeons to offer more options to their patients. Dr. Mills discusses an alternative option for a breast lift which involves using mesh material known as an “internal bra” to support the breast so less tissue is removed.
“We are always looking for better outcomes for our patients and that being the case plastic surgeons being the best innovators!” exclaims Dr. Mills.
